Turquoise Matte glaze was produced to create a smooth, “soft” surface on the pots that would be a change from the glossy finishes typical in the Owen family of glazes. Ben Owen III wanted to add a weathered copper surface to the green glazes he makes, and he studied the pottery’s Chinese Blue and Patina Green finishes for inspiration. The ivy green to sage pigment in the Turquoise Matte glaze is made from copper oxide and titanium oxide. The matte finish is created by using magnesium and calcium in the glaze. Carbon present in the firing process also affects the range of color in the Turquoise Matte.
