Ben Owen III Workshop at the Bascom Art Center -Soda/Salt Kiln Firing & Wheel Throwing Workshop Summer 2025

  • The Bascom Art Center 323 Franklin Road Highlands, NC, 28741 United States (map)

Three Spots Left!

The workshop begins with glazing demonstrations and an exploration of options for enhancing effects in soda firing. Techniques such as the use of flashing slips for accents and brushwork will be introduced, alongside traditional glazes. Participants are asked to bring 10-20 small (4”-6”h) and medium (9”-12”h) pots. Plates are not recommended, though bowls with a diameter of up to 8” are acceptable. A variety of pieces is encouraged to maximize learning opportunities.

Once the soda kiln is loaded, it will be preheated overnight and fired to completion the following day. A discussion of the firing process will be integral, providing participants the chance to assist with kiln adjustments and the addition of soda during the final stages of firing. While the kiln is firing, participants will have time to begin creating pots on the wheel, focusing on techniques for shaping and altering clay.

The workshop will explore a variety of functional and decorative styles, reflecting foundational elements of Ben’s family pottery traditions and his studies in college and abroad. Some forms will be constructed in multiple parts and assembled during the workshop. Attention will be given to finishing techniques, details, and various approaches to glazing and firing, with a focus on surface enhancement.

Ben will also share his philosophy and design process, offering insights into his specific methods of working with clay, as well as the rich pottery traditions of the historic Seagrove area in North Carolina. Participants will be encouraged to engage in open discussions throughout the workshop, fostering a collaborative and enriching learning environment.
